Sermon on the mount - P2
From the Pastor’s Desk
Did you know that salt was once the most sought-after commodity on the planet? Not until modern excavation and dehydration techniques did salt become so common. In the days of Jesus, it was considered highly valued and used to preserve and to flavor the food of the ancients. Not only was it used as “barter” but the Roman Soldiers were actually paid salt as a portion of their salary. In fact, the word “salary” is derived from the Latin word “sal” which means “salt”. Thus, when Jesus said, “you are the salt of the earth”, He was conjuring up images that supersedes a salt shaker sitting on a kitchen table. Rather, the believer is a highly valued asset that not only preserves life but gives that life “new flavor”. Similarly, Jesus said that we are the “light of the world” putting the believer on the same level as the Savior Himself who is the “True Light of the world”. Mankind on his own has no light. Like the moon which only reflects the light from the sun, our only light comes to us from Him who is that “True Light of the world”. Only when we are “in HIM” can we reflect that light for others to see. Today, as we move further into the
Sermon on the Mount, let us understand how our Savior views those who believe on His name as “Salt and Light”.
