After 70 years in captivity, a small group of Jews returned to the land of Israel to rebuild the temple which had been decimated by the Babylonian King, Nebuchadnezzar. At first the people went right to work rebuilding the Temple of God. But then, apathy, discouragement and local resistance convinced them to build their own houses and the work on the House of God came to an end. After 15 years, God sent the Prophet Haggai to tell these people who were living in their “paneled houses”, while God’s House (The Temple) lay in ruin, to get back to work. His message was simple – “Consider Your Ways”. Haggai pointed out that the people needed to spend more time on the building of God’s Temple and less time on their own supposed needs. The Temple of God today is no longer a building. Today, God’s Temple resides in the hearts of the believers. We do not need wood or stone to build a physical temple yet many of our temples are in need of repair. God wants for us to continually be building and rebuilding that temple (Our walk with God). His message today for us is the same as it was in the days of Haggai – “Consider Your Ways”.
