From the Pastor’s Desk
After Jesus had called His disciples and began a ministry of healing in the region of Galilee, He went up on a small mountain (hill) and began teaching the multitudes spiritual lessons concerning the Kingdom of God. This was Jesus’ first public address and it is known to us as “The Sermon on the Mount”. Jesus began by outlining the “blessed” who will be the heirs of that Kingdom. Many of the characteristics which we studied last week in the “Fruits of the Spirit” will be the traits of the “blessed”. This portion of scripture is called “The Beatitudes” and is an introduction to a life in a Kingdom that is nothing at all like the world in which we live. Jesus spoke of a Kingdom in which spiritual rewards would replace worldly notions of wealth and power. In this Kingdom, the rewards will go to those who are “poor in spirit, meek, merciful and who seek peace above power”. This Kingdom already exists in a place called Heaven but this Kingdom will also be extended to the qualified o those here on earth. This will be the fulfilment of the prayer, “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven”.
